Breed History

The Prague Ratter is said to be the smallest breed in the world. Maximum Height is 7-9 inches, while weight is 2-4 pounds. The coat color is black with tan markings. Coat length is usually short but new "long hair" Prague Ratters are becoming popular in Czech Republic and Germany. The longer coats prevent them from getting cold and getting "shaking syndrome" as is common in smaller sized short coat dogs.

Seldom seen outside of the Czech Republic, the Prague Ratter is gaining tremendous popularity within the United States and is becoming the "must have" in affluent circles. At this time, the only way to purchase a Prague Ratter is to travel to the Czech Republic (or contact us!).

The Prague Ratter is a miniature, lively and active dog. He is highly developed. The Prague Ratter understands children and is very good in a family environment. This breed shows great love for his masters and is very watchful. Uncommon for such a small dog, Prague Ratters are usually not barkers. He is very social, obedient, and warm-hearted. By nature he is noble and intelligent.

As the breed is really so old, it is practically impossible to trace its early beginnings. However, the Polish chronicler Galla Anonym wrote that the Polish king Boleslav II The Brave (1058 -1080) became fond of the Ratter. He had two and they came from Bohemia (the Czech lands).

The Ratter was often present at royal banquets. This small dog also symbolized the independence of Czech lands (Bohemia) and sovereignty of the Czech nation. From the early history of the Czech lands (Bohemia) the Ratter adorned the courts of Czech princes and kings and was often given as a gift to other European rulers. From the royal palaces it then spread to other affluent members of society.

Average Life span - 12-14 years

Perfect for Apartment Dwellers, can be litter box trained.

The only known health problems are associated with such small legs. It is really best to let Prague Ratters walk on their own even when tempted to carry them. A Prague Ratter with strong legs is a healthy Prague Ratter!
